NEPBA Mourns Fallen State Police Trooper in Lynnfield Tragedy

May 6, 2026

The New England Police Benevolent Association is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a Massachusetts State Police Trooper, 30-year-old Kevin Trainor, who was killed in the line of duty early Wednesday morning after a wrong-way crash on Route 1 in Lynnfield.

This tragedy is a painful reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every single day. While most people are asleep and safely at home, our officers and troopers are out on the roads responding to emergencies, placing themselves directly in harm’s way to protect the public. In this case, Trooper Trainor responded to reports of a wrong-way driver and never made it home.

Too often, the risks associated with this profession are overlooked. Every traffic stop, every roadside response, and every emergency call carries uncertainty and danger. Officers do not have the luxury of knowing what awaits them when they answer the call. Yet they continue to show up, day after day, committed to protecting complete strangers, even at great personal risk.

Today, one family is grieving an unimaginable loss. An entire law enforcement community is grieving alongside them.

On behalf of the NEPBA and our more than 5,000 members across New England, we extend our deepest condolences to the Trainor Family, loved ones, friends, and our brothers and sisters of the Massachusetts State Police. We also ask the public to keep all first responders impacted by this tragedy in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.

Trooper Trainor made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. That sacrifice will never be forgotten.
